Two state leaders say they’ll ask that the U.S. Supreme Court review a federal court decision clearing the way for inmate voting in Washington.
Following Tuesday’s decision by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel revoking the state prohibition on felon voting, Attorney General Rob McKenna and Secretary of State Sam Reed now say they’ll ask the nation’s highest court to review the decision.
The decision, hailed as a landmark win for prisoner-rights advocates, effectively removed the state’s restrictions on felon voting on civil-rights grounds.
Under the Washington law at issue, citizens convicted of a felony lose the right to vote until they are released from custody and off of Department of Corrections supervision. The 2-1 ruling by a Circuit Court of Appeals panel put those restrictions in doubt, with the majority finding that the state restrictions unfairly penalize minorities.
In an announcement Wednesday afternoon, McKenna and Reed said they believe the issue is ripe for review by the Supreme Court, and that their agencies — defendants in the lawsuit alongside the governor’s office — will ask for such a hearing. Objecting to the appeals court decision, both noted circuit courts elsewhere in the nation have come to the opposite conclusion while reviewing similar cases.
“This case began back in 1996, it’s been to the 9th Circuit twice already and now it’s time for the U.S. Supreme Court to step in to resolve the split between the federal courts of appeals that the 9th Circuit has created,” McKenna said in a statement. “The felon disenfranchisement laws of Washington and 47 other states hang in the balance.”
McKenna added that, should the Supreme Court accept the case, he intends to argue it himself.

Posted by: | CommentsRep. Maxine Waters does not open her mouth except to change her feet. In an interview on the comical MSNBC channel, she stands by Rep. Charles Rangel as she downplays the serious allegations against Rangel of failure to disclose sources of income and pay taxes.
Says Walters, “I want to tell you, there are many members who, if you go back over all of their records, over all of the years, you’re going to find that there were disclosures that were not made”.

As expected, the House voted against Congressman John Carter’s resolution to remove Rangel as Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee pending the completion of an investigation into the charges against him.

A few days ago we reported about Congressman Charles Rangel’s tax troubles.
The powerful Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, the chief tax-writing committee for the U.S., would like us to forget about his personal tax troubles. What to do… What to do? I know, Let’s play the race card.
FoxNews quotes a New York Post exclusive:
First it was Gov. Paterson. Now the dean of New York’s congressional delegation has played the race card — and just as the governor did, he’s using President Obama to do it, the New York Post reported.
Rep. Charles Rangel said Tuesday that “bias” and “prejudice” toward Obama are fueling opposition to health-care reform.
Those incendiary comments came on the heels of Paterson’s controversial comments about race that also mentioned the nation’s first black president.
“Some Americans have not gotten over the fact that Obama is president of the United States. They go to sleep wondering, ‘How did this happen?’ ” Rangel (D-Manhattan) said Tuesday.
Rangel has a dream that Obama’s little congressman will one day live in a nation where he will not be judged by the content of his character, but by the color of his president’s skin.
Rangel then likened the battle over health-care expansion for the uninsured to the fight for civil rights.
“Why do we have to wait for the right to vote? Why can’t we get what God has given us? That is the right to live as human beings and not negotiate with white southerners and not count the votes. Just do the right thing,” he said.
Rangel’s comments came less than two weeks after Paterson claimed he has been the victim of a racist white media — and also suggested that opposition to Obama’s plan is racially driven.
The White House was quick to rebut Paterson’s comments.
Critics of ObamaCare blasted Rangel for taking the low road.
“Charlie Rangel knows that race has nothing to do with the health-care debate. He should not be implying that race has anything to do with it,” said Rep. Peter King (R-LI).
State Conservative Party leader Mike Long called Rangel’s comment “outrageous and outlandish” — and suggested the congressman might be trying to deflect attention from his ethics woes.

Shhhhh! Don’t tell anybody! Poor Arlen

“This is a fundraiser’s nightmare: the FEC has ruled that Club for Growth can indeed contact all of Arlen Specter’s donors since 2004, who gave him upwards of $11 million, to inform them they are all entitled to a refund of campaign donations now that Specter has switched parties and become a Democrat. Specter so far has been forced to return about $500,000 — but many people who gave to him don’t know they can ask for their money back now that he’s switched parties.”

Posted by: | CommentsAmerican Thinker today published this thought provoking article with the title: “What is going on here?” authored by MJ Motley It brings to mind a line from several episodes of the 1950′s I Love Lucy TV show. Lucy would always be in trouble and Ricky would always demand an explanation in his thick Cuban accent. Only this isn’t the least bit amusing:
Alright enough already! Will someone please turn the lights back on and roll the credits for this week’s episode of the Twilight Zone.
First we have the brazenly Orwellian directive from the Office of Health Reform/Ministry of Truth to contact our friendly snitchboard operator to report any “fishy” communications from our neighbors/political extremists. Then from Pamela Geller’s Atlas Shrugs I learn that the National Guard is now looking for a few good internment/resettlement specialists?
Really?
Internment of whom?
I’m moving where?
As if the seeming overnight bankruptcy of our entire country were not enough to rattle our nerves, we have the White House’s apparent confidence that it need not bother fretting over the appearance of totalitarianism. What is it that imbues these people to think that no-one will notice the unsettling parallels they have with unseemly dictators?
It is at about this point that I start trying to reassure myself that this can’t really be as terrifying as it sounds. Then I remember this little clip entailing what Obama’s former SDS friends had in mind for people like me. Many of whom, like Marilyn Katz & Andy Stern, are wandering the halls of the White House today.
Taken separately, the White House’s asking Americans to inform on each other, the apparent creation of a new Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and the wild-eyed genocidal fantasies of 60′s radicals would probably be enough to disturb anyone. hen taken collectively it becomes the substance from which nightmares are derived.
Let’s re-cap shall we, One, there is now a White House sponsored, “community” driven blacklisting site. Two, we have a freshly created military specialty in our traditionally domestically-oriented National Guard that seems to be tailored towards gulag maintenance and operations. Three, the cherry on top of having subversive elements advising our Dear Leader who had frankly once proposed exactly these same Stalinesque measures including the slaughter of millions of their fellow countrymen!
Boiled down to nuts and bolts it looks something like this;
1) Locate, record and target.
2) Segregate, contain & re-educate.
3) Evaluate, assimilate or eliminate.
Throw in fantasy claims that Obama’s opponents carry swastikas, emanating from the mouth of the person next in line after Vice President Biden in presidential succession.
Fantastical as it seems, and it is. I cannot help but recall the old adage about ducks, so modified a bit, if it sounds like Marx, and acts like Mussolini, it is probably Obama.
Lotsa quacking going on! Interestingly The privacy act of 1974 makes it illegal for the government to collect information on private citizens for exercising their first amendment rights. In the video below Judge Andrew Napolitano argues that this the governments actions are unconstitutional.
