Henry Waxman: Demands that “Citizens Justify Their Political Speech Under Oath”
Posted by: | CommentsThe follow is from an excellent article written by David Harsanyi for Townhall.com about Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
So Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, is demanding that citizens justify their political speech under oath. Nervous Nellies doubtlessly will characterize this as an “overreach.” Crybabies will grouse about the “chilling” effect or the “muzzling” of dissent.
Yet in these heady days of change, it’s all about context. In this case, you’ll be relieved to know, we’re talking about CEOs. These people take home considerably more pay than I do. Accordingly, they deserve to sit through hours of absurd inquires from sanctimonious politicians as a matter of karmic justice.
What they don’t deserve is free speech. The president ably expounded on the matter in the State of the Union address: Corporations should not be entitled to the same constitutional protections as the rest of us.
With this in mind, it should surprise no one that Waxman has requested the “personal testimony” of a few CEOs, who have reported billions of dollars in negative impact to their businesses — per Securities and Exchange Commission disclosure requirements — because of the passage of health care reform.
In the letter, Waxman asserts, “The new law is designed to expand coverage and bring down costs, so your assertions are a matter of concern.” And everyone knows that it is impossible for legislation to have unintended consequences.
Whom are you going to believe, numbers or Joe Biden?
This cabal of profiteering is headed up by AT&T ($1 billion first-quarter charge), Boeing ($150 million), John Deere ($150 million), Caterpillar ($100 million), 3M, AK Steel, Verizon, Prudential, the lodging industry … and so forth and so on, until we hit on every single company affected by the elimination of a tax break on retiree drug benefits. It likely will cost employees and thus consumers an estimated $14 billion — not counting the new Medicare costs.
Chai Feldblum: “Gay Sex is Morally Good”
Posted by: | CommentsObama Labor Pick’s Support for Gay Rights Worries Conservatives
President Obama’s recess appointment of an outspoken supporter of gay rights to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is causing alarm among social conservatives, who worry that she’ll strip religious rights from schools and businesses and “revolutionize” social norms in the workplace.
The appointment of Georgetown University Law Center Professor Chai Feldblum to be one of the EEOC’s five commissioners went largely unnoticed on Saturday, as Republicans zeroed in on Obama’s naming of pro-union labor lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board.
But Feldblum has garnered harsh criticism from conservative religious organizations, who are disturbed by her work to promote gay, lesbian, and transgender rights, including past comments in which she said “gay sex is morally good.”
“She is way beyond what most Americans would consider mainstream,” Shari Rendall, director of Legislation and Public Policy at Concerned Women for America, said in a statement.
A host of conservative groups say Feldblum, who was nominated in September, will use her powerful post to enforce the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit private employers with more than 15 employees from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The legislation clearly states that the act does not apply to corporations, associations or educational institutions with religious affiliations. But Feldblum’s critics worry that other employers could be forced to make decisions that conflict with their religious or moral beliefs.
While Feldblum’s work to end prejudice against gays and lesbians has been lauded by many in the legal community, conservative groups say her appointment to the EEOC will have detrimental and far-reaching consequences.
“She wants to change the moral bearing of this country,” said Andrea Lafferty, executive director of the Traditional Values Coalition. Lafferty said the hiring of a transgender teacher in a school, for example, would be “traumatizing” for students who are “still growing and learning about sexuality.”
“We send children to school to learn reading, writing and arithmetic. Having a transgender or ‘she-male’ teacher in the classroom should not be part of that equation,” she said.
Feldblum’s public comments and causes have raised alarm among social conservatives. In a 2004 speech at UCLA, she said “gay sex is morally good” and boasted about a project she launched, known as Workplace Flexibility 2010, which she said aimed to “change the face of the American workplace” and “revolutionize social norms.”
The Obama administration is standing by its decision to appoint the Harvard-educated attorney to the EEOC, an independent federal agency that enforces laws against workplace discrimination.
In a posting on the White House Web site, the administration listed Feldblum’s formidable credentials, including her work as legislative counsel to the AIDS Project of the American Civil Liberties Union and her help in drafting the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
Planned Parenthood Distributes Sexually Explicit Brochures at Girl Scout Meeting
Posted by: | CommentsPlanned Parenthood continues it mission of destroying families and corrupting the population.
The Catholic News Agency reports that, “Early this week, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts hosted a panel in which Planned Parenthood was allowed to distribute brochures containing sexually explicit material to the young girls. The panel served as part of the annual U.N. Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).”
According to the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), the brochures titled, “Happy, Healthy and Hot,” are aimed at young people with HIV and give graphic details on sex, encouraging a casual approach to sexual experimentation. The brightly colored pamphlets feature silhouettes of young people and state, “Many people think sex is just about vaginal or anal intercourse… But, there are lots of different ways to have sex and lots of different types of sex. There is no right or wrong way to have sex. Just have fun, explore and be yourself!”
The pamphlet continues by encouraging adolescents to “Improve your sex life by getting to know your own body. Play with yourself! Masturbation is a great way to find out more about your body and what you find sexually stimulating. Mix things up by using different kinds of touch from very soft to hard. Talk about or act out your fantasies. Talk dirty to (your sexual partner).”
C-FAM also reports that the CSW event also held a young women’s caucus that was co-moderated by the Girl Scouts and the YMCA. Part of the caucus included an “Intergenerational conversation” that addressed “reproductive health” as well as a recent Girl Scout project aimed “at securing the right of women, men and adolescents aged between ten and twenty-five, to better reproductive and sexual health.”
Several leaders of U.N. organizations also released a joint statement at the CSW this week called the “U.N. Adolescent Girls Task Force” which encourages U.N. agencies to support initiatives “that empower … adolescent girls, particularly those aged 10 to 14 years.” One aspect of this “empowerment” is providing these young girls with “life-skills based sexuality education, HIV prevention, and sexual and reproductive health.”
